How to Keep Your Dog Safe During an Earthquake

There's been a few earthquakes in the Los Angeles area lately so we thought we'd post some tips that we've compiled to better protect your dog and help keep them safe should a big earthquake hit.

Dogs are family for the majority of us dog owners and we definitely don't want to forget about them should disaster strike!
  • If your dog isn't microchipped, it's definitely a good idea to look into that and always make sure they have current ID tags so it's easy to identify them should they get lost or run off out of fright during an emergency.
  • Keep you dog current with vaccines just in case they end up in a shelter.
  • Make sure you have a plan for your dogs safety just in case you are not home should disaster strike. Talk to your neighbors, friends or someone who can pick your dog up and care for them until you can get to them.
  • Post a sign or dog alert on your window or door notifying visitors there's a dog inside so emergency workers know to look for them.
  • Once authorities advise it is safe to return home, use caution as debris can inflict injuries to your dog and you also want to keep them restrained to prevent them from running off since their familiar landmarks and smells will be altered.
  • Seek professional help if your dog exhibits abnormal behaviour patterns post disaster.
  • Don't forget about your dog while putting together a survival kit, here's some items to include:
    • Current Photos of Your Dog
    • Vaccination Records, proof of these will be required for housing animals in many facilities.
    • Collar, Leash, Carrier and Muzzle if Needed
    • 3 Weeks Supply of Dog Food, Water
    • Treats, Toys, Blanket
    • Disposal Bags
    • First Aid Kit (available at ASPCA Online Store)
  • Lastly, try to stay calm.  Dogs can get more shaken and anxious if we display signs of stress and anxiety ourselves.
